We arrived in Rome the evening before the tour began so had the evening and most of the day to explore on our own. We checked into Hotel Museum and looked for dinner. In Cinque Terre we had eaten Italian dishes for every meal so the kids were excited to discover a large variety of food choices near the Vatican. We chose burritos for dinner at Maybu and Indian for lunch the next day.

Jody offered an optional morning outing to see St. Peter's Basilica. Our plan was to arrive just before the security lines opened up so that we could have 30 minutes to explore the Basilica before returning to the hotel for breakfast and our scheduled activities for the morning. Jody reminded us to cover our shoulders and our knees for modest dress for St. Peter's Basilica and the Pantheon.
Unfortunately, only one security line was open, so our 30 minutes became 15 minutes. It was still absolutely worth seeing. Several people in our group went back later to spend more time. |
